Today I welcome guest author Dienece Darling as she shares how a God moment changed her life--and suggests perhaps He is waiting for all of us to notice those times in our own lives.
I’ve been teaching my son to budget since he was five. Never in all that time, did I think those lessons would end up furthering my dream to be a writer one day.
It was March 2022, and I still couldn’t decide what to do with my Christmas money. My heart wanted to enter the ACFW Genesis contest. I had my entry all ready, but there was no peace in my heart about sending it in. Not with calf high grass and weeds invading the garden just outside my window. My health hadn’t allowed me to wrangle any lasting control over the jungle, and I only had enough money to either enter the contest or hire a gardener. My head said the garden should be my priority, but my heart pained at the thought of putting off my writing dream yet again. The deadline loomed only hours away, and I had no idea what to do.
With a mind full of my own problems, I knelt next to my son’s bed for bedtime prayers. Everything seemed so normal. My son was buried under his blankets like always. In the middle of my prayer, I felt God give me a little nudge to share my problem aloud and not just in my head like I usually did for the things I was grappling with. I figured what could it hurt? It might even teach my son how to pray better.
Instead, my son flung his blanket off and asked what my decision was about the moment I said “Amen”. I could have blown him off.
Instead, I shared—all of it, even my heart’s desires. And do you know what he did? That 11-year-old lying in bed took all those lessons I’d taught him and walked me through all the pros and cons of each choice, even listened to my desires and took them into consideration. Then he came up with a way I could hire a gardener and enter the contest. Talk about blow me away!
Well, the jungle now looks like a garden; it’s so satisfying to walk past the tidy plants. Also, I made it to the semi-finals for the Genesis Contest 2022 Historical Romance category. All because God used my kid to answer my prayer.
Feeling a nudge lately? Don’t ignore it. Has someone offered you advice, and you don’t think they could help you? Don’t blow them off! It might be God answering your prayer in an unexpected way.
