Today I welcome author Tracy Fagan as she shares her latest release.
Let me introduce you to Lisa. She is a bright, talented, and adventurous young lady who has a deep desire to be married. The novel, When Love Isn’t Love, tells of her difficult journey in searching for love and finding nothing but heartache until God steps in. As part of her story, I received the blessing being able to experience a different country and culture while I wrote this book.
One of the destinations in Lisa’s journey is Brazil. I loved writing about this part of her story. It brought back memories of my own journey to Brazil while I was in college. As I reminisced the ship docking in the vibrant city of Salvador, I began to hear the sound of the drums of Olodum. As I wrote, I decided to do some research to check my memory. After all, that was, um….SEVERAL years ago!
As I began to learn more about this interesting country, the experiences were coming back. I remember being very curious about Candomblé. It combines the African religions of the Yoruba, Bantu, and Fon with elements of Catholicism. As African slaves were being brought over to Brazil, they were forced to accept the Catholic faith. So, they took the statues of the saints and used them to represent the gods of their religion. Lisa’s experience at this ceremony resembled mine. Growing up Catholic, it was strange to see these statutes being used in ceremonies to these African gods. This encounter was a great addition to the spiritual battle Lisa unknowingly finds herself in throughout this book.
It was also fun to research capoeira, the Brazilian martial art Lisa studies in the book. This martial art actually looks more like a dance. It includes a unique set of instruments and music. I enjoyed watching several YouTube videos and hearing the sounds of the traditional rhythms that drive the movements of the participants. I will admit, I thought about looking for a capoeira school here in Denver to give it try!
Now you can’t talk about a foreign culture without mentioning the food. I do remember Brazilian food to have a unique smell and taste. That all came back as Lisa and Andres, her husband, enjoyed Feijoada. In my research I also learned about the acerola cherry. I don’t remember tasting it when I was there, but Lisa and Andres did get to enjoy some acerola cherry ice cream on their adventures.
While the storyline of When Love Isn’t Love takes Lisa through some painful encounters, it also whisks her and the reader off to some thrilling destinations and shows the ultimate power of God’s love. Grab your blanket and curl up in your favorite chair as you allow the gift of storytelling transport you to beautiful foreign lands.
