Help me welcome friend and author Susan G. Mathis as she shares about her upcoming release and her newest series.
Libby’s Lighthouse is the first in my Love at a Lighthouse three-book series. It’s about a lighthouse keeper’s daughter who finds a mysterious sailor with amnesia, and the secrets she uncovers may change her life forever.
Elizabeth Montonna, daughter of the Tibbett’s Point Lighthouse keeper, thought she’d love the lighthouse life forever—until her mother, on her deathbed, reveals a long-buried secret. Now Elizabeth’s world has been turned upside down, making her question if she’ll ever truly belong and be loved. But when a dashing young sailor appears on her shore, wounded and disoriented, she finds purpose in helping him recover. Although the man knows nothing about his past or identity, his kindness and character steal a little more of her heart each day. If only she knew his full name.
As many of us do, Libby loves a good sunset. Here’s an excerpt from Libby’s Lighthouse that tells the tale:
“Libby turned to view the river again, and her heart danced at the sight. Puffy clouds raced through the indigo sky, obscuring most of the fading, twinkling stars. The crescent moon peeked
out between one cloud bank and another, compelling the rippling waves to glitter like jewels.
Then came her favorite part. God’s paintbrush, dipped in rose and lilac and a touch of
pale orange, swept the eastern edge of the water. Muted colors burst through the mist in a kaleidoscope of beauty, pushing back the darkness and dispelling the remains of the evening’s
storm. If only He would remove her darkness, her inner storm.
She sighed a silent plea. As the fog dissipated, the pale colors grew more and more vibrant. The stars twinkled their last goodbye. The moon winked farewell. The horizon, illuminated in molten gilt.
And then, voila! Up popped the glorious ball of golden warmth, bathing the landscape with a soft, baby yellow. Glittering its good-morning kiss to the world.
Libby gasped as tears blinded her view. She blinked, then wiped away the moisture with her shirtsleeve before turning her attention to the shoreline.
Wait! She blinked again, focusing on the rugged waterfront. What was their golden retriever exploring along the rocky beach? She strained to catch a better view.
What was he barking at? A dead animal? A piece of a boat? No. It moved! Rose. Stood.
A man!
Libby surveyed the tower to make sure everything was secure. She scurried down the ladders, then the steep metal steps, and then out into the musky morning dampness. She
dashed across the dew-laden grass toward the incessant sound of Buoy’s barking. The shoreline descended a good ten feet or more below the lawn, and when she got to the edge, the man
was nowhere to be seen.
“Where is he, Buoy? Show me, boy.”
Her faithful dog whimpered and pawed furiously behind several large rocks, but from her vantage point, she couldn’t confirm it was the man she’d seen from the tower. Had it been her imagination?
A groan.
“Sir, I’m coming to help. I’m the lightkeeper’s daughter.” As she hurried to assist him, the slippery, moss-covered rocks and sharp stones almost tripped her up.
When she reached her dog, a man lay behind a large boulder in the pebble-ridden beach, half in the water and fully drenched by it. “I’m here to help. Please lay still so I can make sure nothing is broken.”
The man groaned again and rubbed the heels of his hands over his eyes. When he opened them, icy blues held a glacier of secrets tucked behind them. He quickly squeezed them shut.
“Blathers! The light hurts.”
The man reached around and touched the back of his head. He winced, his deep, raspy moan tainted with pain. His hand came away covered in blood.”
