Thrilled to welcome a husband and wife team today as they share their insights into raising children. Please welcome Stan & Cheryl Schuermann.
In your desire to find help for the present, do you wish you could interview someone from the past?
Imagine interviewing Abraham Lincoln to learn how he led this new nation, preserving it through a terrible civil war.
Or maybe Hudson Taylor. We might ask how he conducted himself as he and others established a Christian mission in China, enduring many challenges.
And then we think of the Apostle Paul. Paul’s world two thousand years ago, even without Twitter and Facebook, was just like ours today. He describes the people who surrounded him as lacking self-control, being lovers of self and lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God. And just like our day, Paul describes them as “disobedient to parents.”
Though we are unable to talk to Paul now, he gave us several letters written to his young churches.
The key topics of Raising Kids for Tomorrow’s World are drawn from Paul’s letter to the Thessalonians, a unique section of scripture. In Chapter 2, verses 1-14, Paul shares with readers how he pastored and parented his spiritual children in Thessalonica.
Imagine the conversation we could have in our living room! Within his tender words, Paul answers the questions we might be tempted to ask:
· Paul, what did you do so your efforts would not be in vain?
· In the midst of so much conflict, how did you keep your focus and sense of mission?
· What did your spiritual children see in your life? Why did they want to imitate you?
From the beginning to the end of this section, Paul lays out exactly what he did to parent his flock. He ends with the glorious result in verse 13, declaring his thankfulness for his children’s acceptance of the gospel and the work of God in their lives.
And we also thank God constantly for this, that when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers.
Isn’t this what all Christian parents desire for their children?
Through the pages of this book, theological truth is presented in an easy to understand and fresh way through story, parable, and example. Works of both historic and contemporary pastors and theologians are woven throughout thirty-six short chapters. Written with small groups in mind, every chapter includes questions for reflection and discussion as well as ideas for application.
From “Discover Boldness” to “Be the One Your Children Want to Imitate,” readers learn to embrace their parenting role with confidence, wisdom, and courage as they raise their children to follow Christ.
