Michelle Dragalin provides a review of a Nora Roberts/JD Robb series.
The In-Death series, with the main characters of Lieutenant Eve Dallas and Roarke ,the first book of the series was published in 1995. According to varies sources, Nora Roberts is an extremely prolific writer. She would meet her contractual obligations well in advance of her deadlines. Consequently, her literary agent asked that she write another series under a pseudonym. As JD Robb, Roberts published a series of futuristic science fiction police procedurals. The idea was that this series would stand on its own merits. However, in 2001 the publisher fully revealed that JD Robb was a pseudonym for bestselling powerhouse Nora Roberts.
The basic premise of the series is set in the mid-21st century New York City, where Eve Dallas
is a lieutenant in the NYPSD (New York Police and Security Homicide division. She and her husband Roarke, one of the richest men in the world, usually work together to solve a murder(s). In addition, the other characters are Captain Ryan Feeney, Detective Delia Peabody, Detective Ian McNab, and Dr Charlotte Mira. In addition, there is Mavis Freestone (a character that I would like to see more of
in the novels) and Captain Feeney’s wife, Sheila who is always mentioned but I don’t think anyone refers to her by name. These are two characters I would like to see more or and hear more about in the stories.
Dallas and Roarke were raised in an extremely abusive environment. In fact, it wasn’t until Dallas hooked up with Roarke that she started remembering what her father did to her when she was a child. This premise always plays a part in the novel either in a clever way or bad way when they are working on a murder.
The stories are wonderfully written. Currently her books are making a leap in their use of technology. I noticed right around her 18th book the technology really jumped up a notch.
Right now, the series by JD Robb is one of the few series that I can read repeatedly. Although I don’t enjoy her audio books as much. JD Robbs writes in such a way that you need to read the book and the picture of the person is ingrained in your head. It is a great series, and I am glad that she writes so quickly, because I already have the next book on pre-order and can’t wait for it to come out!
