From Brokenness to Healing: A Personal Testimony of Transformation

Tammy Adams • December 17, 2023

Join me today as Tammy Adams shares her personal story in a most transparent way.

It all started with four words, "I don't trust you." That's when I began my journey with Celebrate Recovery. The first night was humbling. I was desperate to understand why I found myself repeatedly in circumstances I didn't want to be in. I learned there was a name for my entrenched habits, Co-dependency.

Nine months later, I’ve unraveled a poignant truth from my past—I was hanging on to the habits of a little girl seeking comfort during chaos, trying to make sense of a childhood filled with unanswered questions and painful memories. Born to parents entrenched in their own turmoil, my early years were marked by chaos, separation, and trauma. Each transition was a chapter of suffering, from a tumultuous early childhood to cruel environments.

I had so many holes in my childhood and photos that I had no idea where they were taken, who I was living with, what had happened to me while I was there. My mom had blocked out memory of this portion of our lives. My Uncle and my aunts didn’t remember much and what they did remember didn’t fill in the gaps. The other persons that would know for sure the who, what, when, where were dead. Trying to figure out my past was like unraveling an elaborate knitted blanket or trying to do a puzzle with too many pieces missing.

Amidst the chaos, there were moments of kindness and love, but my road has been paved with hardships, and loss. It’s been a turbulent journey, from family upheavals to finding refuge amid despair. My story is one of survival—a journey marked by resilience and faith.

Since starting my Celebrate Recovery step study with a group of 9 other women and together digging into the deepest parts of our hurts and habits, I finally grasped that I’ve had almost no control of anything through my life and when I am triggered (i.e., I feel unsafe or I feel that others are making decisions about me - without me), I’ve grabbed hold of anything that I could control. Then made decisions (healthy and unhealthy) that seemed to create stability for the moment.

You may have a similar story to mine in that you grew damaged roots through traumatic events. You may not have experienced anything like me, but habits were forged through different circumstances. I hope that my story encourages you to know that God is the best surgeon ever. He’s carefully performed surgery on me over the last nine months and seared the roots that were deep and dangerous. There may be more, I know He will find them and take care of those too. I sincerely pray that today you will go to the Great Physician and allow Him to perform life-giving surgery on you too. The healing is worth the pain.

“Therefore, confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.” James 5:16
