Today I welcome aspiring author Kendall Hoxsey as she shares about where she finds inspiration.
I have dreamed about being a writer since I was twelve years old. I loved reading novels such as The Count of Monte Cristo, Jane Eyre, Anne of Green Gables, and The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. All unique and electrifying novels for the reader. The book that did ultimately change my life was The Diary of Anne Frank. Reading the thoughts and musings of a real young woman living under extraordinary circumstances made me reflect and want to join the ranks of great writers more than other works of fiction.
My own journey to becoming a writer has been long and arduous. Yet I believe I am still just beginning the journey. After reading The Diary of Anne Frank, I wrote in a journal every night. At this point I have ten journals full of musings from a young woman as she grew from twelve to thirty-six. Is the writing perfect? Not in the least! But it kept me writing even while future story ideas percolated within my maturing imagination. I felt many times that I hadn’t experienced enough life to write a novel with developed characters. In other words, I sought to write a perfect novel. I never acknowledged that like in anything writers need to practice their craft. It was only the end of 2021 when I decided that I needed to dive into my passion and give it more daily attention. Not to mention accept that I would face multiple rejections and writing fatigue or writer’s block depending upon the day.
Growing up in a Christian family I know I am truly blessed. I have a family that loves me. I am beginning on my own journey of raising two children with my wonderful husband. These are all things that Anne Frank never got to achieve. As a mature woman I realize the lesson we can all remember from Anne Frank is that she never lost her faith in humanity and God. In the manuscripts I am working on today all characters have lost their way a bit and need to remember that faith is never easy. I am grateful for the journey I am embarking upon and the friends I have met along the way. I know that the road to publication could be longer than the time it took to decide to write fictional novels. No matter what I will always strive to live faithfully while creating characters and stories.
