Today I'm excited to welcome author Rebecca Grace as she answers some tough questions and shares about her latest release.
How did you get started writing?
My love of writing started when I was in my teens, though I had always been an avid reader and loved going to the library. I made weekly stops at our local library on my way home from school and in summer I would walk there every week. My mother introduced me to libraries when I was in grammar school and whatever city I’ve lived in since, I’ve always had a library card. When I wasn’t reading, I made up stories and wrote them in whatever notebook was handy. (I still keep a notebook and pen in my purse in case the muse strikes…)
My childhood heroines were comic book journalists Brenda Starr and Lois Lane! Is it any wonder that was what I set for my career when I was in grade school? My college degree was in journalism and led me to a job where writing became my way of life. I wrote non-fiction (news) at various television stations five days a week and on weekends I let my mind wander into towns I created filled with characters I invented. Wanting to do more with fiction, I attended writing conventions and began submitting. Eventually, I met a group of writers who were putting together an anthology. My story was accepted, and that led to my first contract. A stand-alone book followed and then another and another. That’s why I always tell writers who are just getting started: “Don’t let rejection get you down. Save those letters and smile later.”
As a journalist, I have been able to travel around the country, sometimes on assignments. The experience also opened the doors to worlds I might not have been able to visit otherwise--from producing interviews with people like First Lady Roselyn Carter, Oprah Winfrey and I once personally interviewed Vice President Dick Cheney. I even got the opportunity to work on the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta for NBC. (I’ve never worked harder in my life, but it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience I will never forget.)
These days I write nearly every day and have a regular critique partner and we exchange pages every week. Sue Viders is in her 80s and a well-known writing teacher. I met her twenty years ago and she’s a great role model. We’ve written several non-fiction and fiction books together.
My latest book, Dead Man’s Treasure, is now available and it’s a story that has stayed with me for a long time until it had to be written. It’s a sequel to an earlier book, Dead Man’s Rules, about the legend that grew from a bloody handprint on a wall. Currently I am working on the final book in the trilogy – Dead Man’s Secrets.
