Join me today as guest author Michelle Dragalin shares her thoughts on the importance of cursive writing.
A new idea -- really is there such a thing as a new idea?. Or is it your new idea? I got to thinking about this because as I consider this year, one thing that comes to mind is that a new idea should grab hold of people and make them pay attention. It could make me money. It could make me famous. It could do a lot o things for me. But is it a new idea?
Well, a new idea meets some qualifications. It is a new idea for me. The meaning of the new idea is new to me. I have my own interpretation for the new idea. It is also, after all, new to me, and I want to expose it to the world. I want to teach it. I want to use it as a Presentation.
Here is an example of how I have developed a new idea.
CURSIVE WRITING
I think that it is very important that everyone knows how to write in cursive. The reason I think it is important is that it is a primary way that we have communicated for a very long time. It is what our history is written in and stored. It is also a way to keep our brains going because it takes more parts of our brain to write than to print.
Is that a new idea? No! However, it is a thought I have had for several years. I have always felt it is important to teach cursive because of the above reasons. However, there are only 23 states that consider cursive writing important enough to be included in their curriculum. I have taught in two of those states, as well as in 6 other states that do not include it in their curriculum. Their focus tends to be on raising test scores, and they consider cursive writing a waste of time.
When I started teaching online, I found a platform that lets me teach whatever I want to, and you guessed it, I have developed 8 classes around cursive. I am in the process of developing two more on this topic. I get paid to teach cursive. It’s interesting that American parents tell me they want their children to learn writing cursive and their schools don’t teach it. Most of my students come from outside of the US, mainly Asia and Australia. Now I am up at midnight teaching cursive!
I also presented a webinar for professional development on cursive writing. It was my best attended webinar.
Now I am writing a blog on my idea. I will also write a more extensive and blog on the importance of writing and learning to write in cursive.
Cursive Writing is not the most exciting topic, but I really think that it is important. In some ways it will be the new secret language for grandchildren. I hope not!!
Think of a new idea! It doesn’t have to be the most important, most exciting, most anything! It just needs to be yours and YOU need to find it most exciting and interesting!
